AUGUST DIMMING

August Dimming

North Stradbroke Island | Queensland | Australia

August Dimming: Sotto in Sù | Scott Bennett | 2005 | Acrylic on canvas | 48″ x 36″ | Private collection

The working title was Straddie, august dimming. Sotto in sù, Italian for ‘up from under’, is a type of perspective typical of Baroque ceiling decoration, which often depicted angels in the clouds of heaven.

This sky seems like a sign. The strange colour might be caused by smog. I had been thinking about global dimming. The sun burst is august.

This painting is based on photographs of Stradbroke Island taken by Anne Jones in August 2005.
